No Rumble in Thunder Locker Room |
|
At 8 am on a cold Wednesday morning the Thunder would normally be taking the ice for a morning practice, but instead were forced to clean out their lockers. The league wide suspension of play until the 08/09 season came as a major disappointment and somewhat of a shock to the team. While some of the players still took the ice just one last time, others spent their time exchanging phone numbers and getting one another's autographs just so they could keep in touch and have memorabilia of time they spent together. While season was short lived, the team served its purpose, with 7 players getting picked for the first MAHL All-Star Game, 2 of them as starters, and 1 the leading scorer of the game and having 2 players getting the permanent call up to the ECHL. That was just the big picture, for the rest of the players they got the experience of playing at the pro level, playing through adversity, and the opportunity to better themselves as players, along with memories that will last a life time.
Since the abrupt halt of the inaugural MAHL season the Indiana Ice Miners were declared league champions. However, coach Brian Cersosimo told his players during this morning's team meeting that if the season would have continued "...we would have been right there in the championship game." Coach Cersosimo had a lot of faith in his young team, sticking with the players he had and not sending anyone home when the times were at their toughest. That character is the building block of the Mon Valley Thunder and it showed in a trickle down effect throughout the whole team as the season progressed.
While for some players this shortened season might be the end of the line for them, others may try to find another team to finish the season with, and some might just skate the frozen ponds and local rinks in anticipation of next seasons training camp. But leave no doubt that the team will be back next season, surely with a few new faces and maybe even some familiar ones as well and no one will forget the year they played in the MAHL. -- Clint Hagmaier
